Graph database is one of the newly adopted databases that revolved around non relational concept for orchestrating its data. One of the most popular Graph database is Neo4j that’s leading implementation of a property graph database. It’s written in Java and leverages a custom storage format and the facilities of the Java Transaction Architecture (JTA) to provide XA transactions. Download Neo4j Installation

To get started using a Neo4j graph database, you have to download it. By navigating into Neo4j site, you can download the proper release for your operating system. For us, Windows-64 bit community edition had chosen. Before going forward into installation steps, you have to prepare the data location that the Neo4j database should use for saving the nodes. For this installation we’ve used the location D:\Neo4j\data.

Install Neo4j

For installing the Neo4j database, you have to follow the below steps:

  • Double clicking on the installed binary file that named neo4j-community_windows-x64_2_0_2.exe and wait for a while being the installation wizard has opened.

  • Click next and accept the agreement listed.
  • From the destination directory select the desired directory that you would to include the installed binaries within it. We’ve selected the D:\Neo4j\Neo4jDB for as an installation folder.

  • Click next to start the installation process and wait a while for being the installation has finished.
  • Once the installation has finished, a complete setup screen is shown with one option and one button.

  • Check the Run Neo4j Community for running the service after finish the installation.
  • Click finish.
  • Once you’ve clicked on the finish button, the wizard will be asking you for the database location that you would like to save your data on it.

Determine Location of Data

  • We’ve used already provided path that created above.
  • Click start for starting the database.
  • While database has been starting, you should see the notification message that tells you to wait while the database being started.

Being Started

  • After the wait notification message, you should be able to see the dialog that telling you that the database started successfully.

  • By seeing Neo4j is ready followed by the URL access, you are getting a Graph Database installed on your machine and you have to access the URL for navigating/operating your database.
  • Once you’ve started you graph database, your data location folder that already pointed before has filled with the Neo4j required files and data. The below snapshot shows you the impact of starting the graph database into data folder.

Data has been initialized

  • By accessing the URL provided, you are getting enter the administration page of the Neo4j that provide you the full privilege of creating, updating, reading and deleting either nodes or relationships.

  • By accessing the administration page, you are become ready for use your graph database for any further processing either by using the Spring Data – Neo4j, Spring Framework Neo4j Template or by using the Cypher for achieving your operations Just on Time.

First Node By Cypher

Cypher is a declarative query language for Neo4j. By using the Cypher you have the ability to:

  • Cypher matches patterns of nodes and relationship in the graph, to extract information or modify the data.
  • Cypher has the concept of identifiers which denote named, bound elements and parameters
  • Cypher can create, update, and remove nodes, relationships, labels, and properties
  • Cypher manages indexes and constraints

For creating a node with a default one property, you have to do the following:

  • Put the cursor after the $ that you’ve seen at the white area in the top of the administration page.
  • Type the following query CREATE (n {name:”JavaBeat”}) RETURN “hello”, n.name
  • You’ve created a node with one property called name and its value is JavaBeat.
  • Look at the result of the created node that should listed below as a default response from the administration console. The response should consider the typed return statement.
